More room for quirks!

I look at Doug, or RCR, or any popular YT channel really, and I wonder how much effort it takes to keep your channel relevant and your audience engaged.  When you become noted for your particular schtick, like both of these guys do, how do you prevent people from losing interest and taking your money stream with them?  It must be hard, especially in this age of short attention spans.  I used to consider both DeMuro and RCR very entertaining when they first came out, but I fell away from really paying attention some time ago.

I agree.

Doug and RCR need something different. They’re like a great entre with no sides.

You savor the entre, go to the sides for something complementary but different.

Yes! I missed those old style vidoes, and the quirks and features review stuff just give me that “he’s gone mainstream vibe” kinda. Not that I don’t enjoy them, but it feels detached from the Doug I used to ( not) know.

Also I wish he’d focus more on his writing, which I prefer.

I prefer everyone’s writing to their onscreen persona (assuming they do both, like Jeremy Clarkson or Joe Rogan, etc ). Very, very few people present better on TV than they do in the written word, but I’m pretty cynical about the Internet as a free-for-all video delivery medium in general...too much noise and crap out there with nobody to really vet or edit it properly

Sometimes they double down on a certain hook that worked for them before, but accelerates the decent into meme-ism if not used carefully. Ex: the “quirks” and the Doug Score start as a calling card but degenerate into a running gag.

RCR moved into the hyper-cerebral, literary-focused monologue that pretty much dominates all their work now. I wouldn’t be a fan of 24/7 poop jokes and Harold Slovinski either, but getting in a rut, any rut, is bad for longevity in my mind.

I barely watch his reviews anymore, but watching his “How I Got Started Video” really brought me back to 2013. I felt great but also reflective watching it. It was crazy to think that I had such an interest in him back when he was just getting started; I read all of his stuff on The Truth About Cars and his website, playswithcars.com (it’s still up by the way), he was the first account I followed when I made my Twitter account (he only had a couple thousand followers back then), and I subscribed to his YouTube when he had around 15-20,000 subscribers. That Christmas, I also got his book, Plays With Cars, one of the only books in the past five years I’ve asked for. He was one of my automotive idols, from his goofy articles to his interest in obscure automotive items no one paid attention to, such as license plates. I’m extremely glad he has a channel now going back to those days.

When Doug was talking about when he knew he had a following, I was expecting him to mention the last DC area Cars and Coffee he attended. He and I had tweeted back and forth about it, and he talked me into attending.

He rolled in with his AMG and (surprisingly) got a space up front.

He never left the parking space.

He was swarmed with people the whole time. Every time I walked by to see he was free, he was still there answering questions about the warranty, driving over the PT cruiser, the Skyline, etc... ,. At one point there were even a line of folks with books to be autographed. People drove two hours for this.

This was two hours later. The show was over, and he didn’t even get to see it. Afterwards, h e said to us (UntitledCarShow was there too) “ I think this is the last time I announce in advance I’m going to a Cars&Coffee”
